Dutch food and recipes are quite unique and lovely.
Whether it’s the crisp bitterballen (often found in bars and at home in evening parties), sweet stroopwafels or spice speculaas.
In this chapter of the Country Recipe Challenge, we explore the flavours of the Netherlands.
Herbs like parsley, bay leaf, and chives lend subtle depth to these dishes, often tucked into creamy sauces or sprinkled over root vegetables.
On this page you will find:

3 Key Dutch ingredients to grow
Dutch recipes tend to include all the favourite herbs – like Thyme, basil, etc. Similarly tomatoes, carrots, etc. are often used.
But there are 3 ingredients which are not that often available in shops around the world, but that are key to unique Dutch cooking
1. Kapucijners
These type of pea are sold in most Dutch supermarkets and eating on a regular basis.
Very difficult to buy outside the Netherlands but quite easy & satisfying to grow.
Their usual name is ‘blue pea seeds’ (blauwschokker) and you will grow them exactly the same way as peas.

2. Italian Parsley
Parsley is used a lot in Dutch meals & recipes.
However do note – the type of parsley used in different from the type often sold in supermarket.
It tends to be Italian parsley (which is the variety preferred by chefs in restaurants).
It is quite easy to grow at home and will help you get genuine Dutch meals.

3. Dill
Dill is a very popular herb, used in lot in The Netherlands in many different dishes.
It’s really easy to grow at home, but can get quite tall.
Which is why growing it in a pot makes sense, it also loves sunshine (or a grow light)
