How to Use Oregano in Cooking

Oregano is one of the ‘super’ herbs with a long list of health benefits. For example the webmd site mentions its anti-inflammatory & antioxidant, properties. Oregano tea is used to help with headaches, cough, flu, backpain, etc, etc.

However it is very important to realise that many benefits (& flavour) are reduced during the drying process, which is why growing fresh oregano is such a good idea.

Yes, dried oregano is easy but in addition the fresh type adds lovely extra flavour to meals.

Using Fresh Oregano

Fresh oregano has the best flavour when added near the end of cooking.

To use it:

  1. Remove the leaves from the stems.
  2. Finely chop the leaves.
  3. Stir into sauces, soups or cooked dishes shortly before serving.

Using Dried Oregano

Dried oregano has a stronger concentrated flavour and is usually added earlier in the cooking process.

Can You Freeze Fresh Oregano?

Yes.

There are two simple methods:

Freeze as Herb Cubes

Chop the leaves and freeze them in ice cube trays with a little water or olive oil.

Blanch and Freeze

Briefly blanch the leaves before freezing for longer-term storage.

This allows you to enjoy home-grown oregano throughout the year.
