Not sure which vegetables to grow first?
There are 3 ways to start:
- Quick & easy to grow
- The space you have available
- Vegetable by cooking use
1. Quick & easy vegetables to grow
If you’re just starting out, try:
- Tomatoes – big flavour upgrade over shop‑bought
- Lettuce – fast and forgiving
- Chillies – compact and hugely rewarding
OK not vegetables but in addition herbs are also easy to start.

2. The space you have available
A key item to consider is how much space you have, whether it’s indoors, outdoors or both.
For example the Roma tomatoes pictured where started in the kitchen and then moved outdoors when they got bigger.

| Small spaces & containers | Indoor growing | Quick harvest |
|---|---|---|
| Chillies | Peppers | Spinach |
| Lettuce | Herbs | Spring onion |
| Spinach | Lettuce | Radish |
3. Vegetables by cooking use
The vegetables you grow can have a major impact on the taste & flavour of your recipes.
For example there are many different types of garlic – each with a distinct flavour.
However they are not ideal for growing indoors (due to the smell) but well worth growing outdoors, or on a balcony.

| For sauces & cooking | For fresh eating & salads | For bold flavour |
|---|---|---|
| Tomatoes | Lettuce | Chillies |
| Peppers | Spinach | Onions |
| Garlic | Spring onion | Garlic |
Why grow your own vegetables?
Vegetables picked moments before cooking taste dramatically different from shop‑bought produce. Growing even a small selection at home gives you access to fresher flavour, unusual varieties, and complete control over how and when they’re harvested.
