When made with fresh oregano then oregano lemon lemonade will have a lovely flavour, giving a real taste of summer.

You can make it:

  • Either with sparkling or still water over ice
  • And as sweet as you would like it.

Fresh oregano is great for making drinks. It’s often used in items like oregano tea, but the flavour is great in cold drinks.

How to make oregano lemon lemonade

This recipe is part of the country recipe challenge, and based on a Lebanese recipe. (As provided by an old school friend). Not sure how accurate but he called it a Za’atar lemonade.

Ingredients:

  • 2 sprigs Oregano
  • 6 tbsp Sugar
  • 6 Lemons – unwaxed
  • 250 or 500 ml water (Still or sparkling)

Equipment

  • 1 Bowl
  • 1 Sieve
  • 1 Food blender or shake blender
  • Chef’s knife & chopping board (optional)

Instructions

  • Wash and cut the lemon into bits.
  • Put in a bowl and squeeze the lemons (to release the juice) until they start to break up.
  • Add the sugar, mix with a spoon and leave for a few hours to release the flavour.
  • Peel the oregano leaves from the sprigs.
  • Remove the lemon skin and pips from the bowl and add the oregano.
  • Use the blender to cut into small bits (or I just use a shake blender)
  • Pour through a sieve and add water and ice cubes.
  • The amount of water you add depends on how sweet you would like the lemonade to be.

4 key ingredients when making it

1. Oregano

Oregano is one of the ‘super’ herbs with a long list of health benefits. For example the webmd site mentions its anti-inflammatory & antioxidant, properties. Oregano tea is used to help with headaches, cough, flu, backpain, etc, etc.

It’s often used in Greek, Italian and Turkish recipes. Often used with roasted, fried, or grilled vegetables, meat, and fish.

And very easy to grow at home – more details

2. Lemon

As you can see from the recipe the lemon is cut and left for the skin to flavour the lemonade.

Which is why it’s so important to use the unwaxed types.

However if you’ve bought waxed ones – then you can remove the wax by washing the lemons in hot water. Not ideal but will help.

3. Sugar

The lemonade does tend to have quite a bit of sugar – adds a lovely flavour!!

There are alternatives you can use – honey or brown sugar. However both will affect the flavour of the lemonade.

4. Water

You can use either still or sparkling water.

In the recipe (& video) I used still water on the other hand sparking water works just as well.

It all comes down to personal taste.
