Growing chillies indoors

Chillies – how to grow them indoors

Chillies are one of the best indoor crops to grow.

And the advantage is that you will be able to grow types & varieties not easily available in shops, and that will make a real difference to your recipes.

Key points:

  • Use a sunny window or grow light
  • Grow in pots with good drainage
  • Keep warm and stable

Tips:

  • Rotate plants toward light
  • Avoid cold drafts
  • Feed regularly

The easiest & most effective way to grow chillies indoors is to focus on 3 items:

Item 1 & 2 – Size and Nutrients

When growing plants like chillies (peppers) or tomatoes it is very important to provide them with exactly the right amount of water & nutrients.

There are 2 options you can use

A – Using soil

If you grow them in soil then it’s very important that you use:

  • The right pot size
    • For small types (like Thai, Cayenne, etc.) about 4 litre
    • For large types (like Bell, Poblano) about 26 litre
  • The right amount of water – not to much and let the top soil dry out before watering
  • Plant food – not to much, just add a bit to water once a week

B – Hydroponic

Yes, you can grow them using soil but an hydroponic unit will help you get the best possible results.

And even a compact one (like the one on the right) will help you get crops throughout the season.

The easiest way to see how they work is to read the description detailed product page

Item 2 – using extra light

For chillies light is very, very important.

Especially if you are growing them inside then a specialised growing light will make all the difference.

For example the one pictured has a low energy usage and will transmit exactly the right type of light to help your plants grow.

If you combine the light & an hydroponic system you should be able to grow chillies at any time of the year.
